Do you crave for sushi? Are you still hesitant to eat out? Is takeout kind of expensive? If you said yes to all or any of these questions, then it’s time for you to create a sushi night at home!
Sushi at home has so many advantages. First of all, you get to stay at home. Secondly, after purchasing the tools and gadgets, you’ll save money in the long run compared to paying for restaurant or grocery story sushi all the time.
Raw Fish. You can get this from your local Japanese market in which they sell cut blocks of fish like tuna and salmon that you can cut at home.
Koshihikari Rice. The type of rice is the difference between bad sushi, decent sushi, and great sushi. For great sushi, use high-quality Japanese rice like their Koshihikari variety.
Rice Washing Bowl. One of the keys to good sushi rice is the first step of thoroughly cleaning the rice. Using a rice washing bowl is a great kitchen tool to dump out the cloudy water and retain all the rice kernels. Remember, wash the rice until the water is clear.
Rice Cooker. There are some ridiculously expensive rice cookers out there. And some are actually worth it when you taste the finished product. Zojirushi is one of the best brands of rice cookers out there and they even have a sushi rice setting. A must buy especially if you consume rice at least once a week.
Sushi Rice Wooden Tub. For a real sushi rice experience at home, purchase these Japanese wooden rice tubs which help cool the cooked rice grains.
Sushi Rice Vinegar. You can find recipes online for the sushi vinegar mix or you can also purchase this ready-made mixture. Typically, you add 2 tablespoons per uncooked cup of rice. Scoop the rice into the wooden rice bowl and add the liquid. Gently incorporate to every rice grain and let sit for at least 10-15 minutes.
Sushi Mold. It takes years for authentic sushi chefs to cook rice. And more years after that to start making sushi for customers. Since we clearly are not as trained, you can try using sushi tools and gadgets, like this sushi mold which creates perfectly shaped rice for nigiri sushi.
Sushi Making Kit. If you plan on crafting your own sushi rolls, these sushi making kits help you assemble, roll, and cut large size sushi rolls. If you want smaller, tighter rolls consider the bamboo mats.
Seaweed. If you plan on making sushi rolls, seaweed is a must! You can choose between either Japanese nori or Korean seaweed sheets.
Wasabi. Wasabi is another must-have for sushi at home. There are some weak brands and some weird tasting powders. This is a better brand for a sushi tube.
Soy Sauce. Yes, even the brand and type of soy sauce makes a difference. Look for sashimi soy sauce which has a deeper, more whole taste than regular soy sauce.
