Low Season Travel: Deals and Cheaper Rates in Thailand

Thailand is a desired destination all-year round. High season occurs during the typical winter season, December through March, when the temperatures are most pleasant around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees Celsius). Low season travel takes place during the hottest months in the country, April and May, when temperatures spike well about 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius).

If you can take the heat during this low season, resorts all around the country offer the best deals, such as the lowest rates of the year and even free nights (i.e., 3rd night free).

Chiang Mai nestled in the mountains of northern Thailand hits temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) during April and May months. The destination offers some of the best resorts in the country, like here at Four Seasons Chiang Mai, which offers rates as low as 50% less than during high season

How to Stay Cool in the Heat

The deals in Thailand are understandably tempting. If you do go during low season with the hottest months of the year, tailor your itinerary to account for staying indoors during the day while enjoying the cooler evenings outdoors.

Cooking Classes

Thailand’s tourism encourages travelers to learn about the cuisine. Many hotels offer on-site cooking classes with demonstrations and hands-on experiences. Guests learn how to make a real Pad Thai, curries, mango sticky rice, and much more.

The Oriental Thai Cooking School at the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok. The best cooking class in the country. I have been to this cooking program countless times, learning new dishes each time. The best part of the class is the teacher. Chef Nahrain educates guests about ingredients, quality, and techniques
First, you will watch the demonstration in the classroom, then you will move to the cooking stations where you have your own setup to practice the newly learned techniques. Chef Nahrain spends time with each student ensuring you understand how to complete every step
Finally, you eat what you make. Next to the cooking station is a formal dining arrangement where you dine with your fellow classmates. If you are lucky, Chef Nahrain joins the meal if he does not have an afternoon schedule. This is the opportunity to learn even more about his well-trained background. Fun fact, he can take the spiciest Thai chilies, and yet the spiciest thing he has eaten is Japanese wasabi

Sunset Boat Rides

A boat ride along the Chao Phraya River is a requisite for every traveler to Bangkok. You hire a water taxi or a massive tourist boat with loud music. Alternatively, for a luxury experience, the best five-star hotels in the city are located along the river with their own boat for guests.

Mandarin Oriental Bangkok and The Peninsula Bangkok offer sunset boat rides for a leisurely eating and drinking experience while taking in all the sights along the river with the changing sky in the background

Al Fresco Dinners

Evenings are the best and ideal times to enjoy the outdoors – the heat dies down with a cooler breeze in the air. For the most exclusive al fresco dinners, head to The Peninsula Bangkok and Mandarin Oriental Bangkok

Thiptara at The Peninsula Bangkok. You will not only have the best views right along the river, you will have also an incredible, high-quality Thai feast. Read more about the dinner experience here
Next door to Thiptara is Terrace Rim Naam at Mandarin Oriental Bangkok. The outdoor dining provides a more casual setting than the indoor Sala Rim Naam which features nightly Thai dances along with a set menu
Start with a cold beer, like Thailand’s premium lager Singha. There are also cheaper local beers, but I prefer Singha for its cleaner taste. You can then move on to a cold glass of white wine or cocktails
Vegetable lovers can rejoice in Thailand. Vegetables are fully incorporated into every meal, from breakfast to dinner. Along with vegetables are a range of dips from sweet, salty to spicy to make eating vegetables a desired experience
The best part of Terrace Rim Noam’s menu is the customizable selections. Instead of one large order, you can order four smaller dishes. You can do this with the appetizers, curries, etc. Perfect for sharing with the table and to taste as much of the cuisine as you can. Read more about the dining experience here
