How are they and what do they taste like?

Japanese love their fruit. And they love creating the world’s most expensive fruits. It actually seems like each and everything they make is luxurious. Here is a brief background of the white strawberries, how they are grown, and what they taste like.

About White Strawberries

A white strawberry is a type of strawberry with over 50 varieties now growing in Japan, the US, and a few other countries around the world. They have white skin, hence its name, and red seeds. While they appear unripe, they are purposefully grown to appear white.

White strawberries are grown indoors for very little exposure to sunlight while growing. Strawberries exposed to light while growing attain their red color (much like tomatoes during the summer). So to limit the light makes the strawberries white. In fact, only 10% are entirely white, while the rest of the harvest have a pink or red blush. Because of the extra time, effort, and low yield, 1 berry can sell for $10 USD.

Compared to regular, red strawberries, the white varieties have a more delicate skin and softer texture. At the same time, they are sweeter with a hint of tartness.

Is it worth it? Almost everything that is priced high in Japan is worth trying at least once to experience it for yourself – whether you purchase it in the market or enjoy it as a fruit plate after a luxurious meal.
