Hong Kong is a destination where you can satisfy your international cravings, including specialty cuisines like Japanese izakaya. Here is a look into Three Monkeys which specializes in Japanese modern izakaya and yakitori in the Sheung Wan neighborhood:

Come for Drinks, Stay to Eat

Three Monkeys fits into Hong Kong’s dining scene with its social eating and drinking focus. The restaurant features an all-day happy hour from 12pm to 8pm which entails buy one, take one drinks. Each customer must have their own two drinks in the happy hour special, which means you are likely to order food while you drink.

The food menu opens with izakaya selections, or Japanese small plates and appetizers. These are perfect for nibbling with the drinks. If you want a more substantial meal, the kitchen has a grill for proper yakitori featuring chicken, pork, beef, seafood, and vegetable dishes. If you are still hungry, the back of the menu offers substantial rice and noodle bowls as well as entree dishes.

The most value in the menu and in the happy hour menu is the Japanese draft beef. The mugs and glasses are huge and while it’s happy hour you get two of them. The drinks menu also offers wines, sakes, and a full bar of drinks

Edamame with Truffle Oil. This is great little order to have with drinks. The addition of oil adds a nice little umaminess when you bite out the beans from the edamame shells

Like the edamame, fries are another great order to nibble on with drinks. The fries are coated with a seaweed dusting and come with a mayonnaise-based dipping sauce

If you love vegetables, the yakitori menu offers an excellent variety of grilled vegetables. This eggplant dish is a must get because the grilling makes the eggplant flesh so succulent

While the yakitori menu does offer seafood, pork, and beef selections, you must try some of the chicken dishes as they seem to be the specialties of the proteins. The chicken wings are a must order as they are grilled and seasoned so well

Aside from the chicken wings, the tsukune, or chicken meatball, is another great chicken dish. The meatball is dipped into raw egg yolk with soy sauce to add to the umami taste of the meatball

If you are really hungry, the rice and noodle bowls are a great order to fill up your stomach. Most bowls come with an onsen egg on top to add to the richness of the order. The yakiudon is a great bowl to share with the table
