Revisiting Moritaya for Sukiyaki in Tokyo

Sukiyaki is one of the best choices for a splurge meal when traveling in Japan because of how the meal is cooked at your tableside with service that is both traditional and old-school Japanese culture.

 

About Moritaya in the Marunouchi Building

In Marunouchi, Tokyo’s Financial District, you can dine with epic views of Tokyo (even of Mt. Fuji on a clear afternoon) at Moritaya which is located on the 35th floor of the Marunouchi Building.

At Moritaya, you will choose between sukiyaki, shabu shabu, or teppan-style cooking of their premium beef cuts which come directly from their in-house butcher shop in Kyoto. The restaurant offers an English menu; for drinks, it is solely in Japanese, but you can ask your server for recommendations.

Appetizer. After ordering your meal, you will be given a seasonal selection of small cold bites to start your meal. There is typically a variety of vegetables, seafood, and meat to open up your appetite.
Aside from the range of marbling, the set menu also increases because of additional appetizers. This is a second appetizer of broiled, simmered, and roast beef – 3 small bites that get you excited for the main event.
Sukiyaki beef for 3 persons – Can you believe the server said, “this is just a little marbled.”?! A little marbled with big taste. Even before Instagram, the Japanese always gave importance to the presentation of food at all times.
The sukiyaki meal at Moritaya begins with each order serving one whole slice of beef. It sizzles and caramelizes in the pan creating a more intense beef flavor compared to the Kanto style of simmered sukiyaki.
Everything that the server cooks in the pan is served directly into your egg dipping sauce. This makes for a more whole, umami taste. For the rest of the meal with the vegetables, refer to the links before to see more photos and videos from previous visits to Moritaya in both Tokyo and Osaka.
Dessert varies according to the price you paid for the set meal. The more expensive means the more special fruits you will be served to conclude the meal. In this case, it is muskmelon alongside in-season strawberry and orange with a couple of slices of mochi ice cream.
