Japan’s Favorite Snack.

In Japan, there is always something delicious to eat at any hour of the day. A local favorite that intrigues visitors is the fruit sandwich, locally known as fruit sando. Learn more about it and try one for yourself next time in Japan!

All About the Fruit Sando

Fruit sando originated in posh fruit parlors featuring the premium fruit of the season. Today, you can find these sandwiches practically anywhere, including in all the convenience stores around the country. Locals enjoy a fruit sando for breakfast, snack, and dessert.

The sandwich consists of at least one or a few cuts of seasonal fruit, such as strawberries, kiwis, oranges, blueberries, grapes, mangos, or bananas. The fruit cuts are artfully laid onto two slices of pillowy soft Japanese milk bread which have been spread with slightly sweetened whipped cream.

While it may seem odd to foreigners, it is actually quite like a cake which you can hold. The sandwich is all about the freshness and natural sweetness of the fruit. Plus, it is less sweet and sugary than a slice of cake.

The easiest place to find them is in convenience stores. However, the tastiest ones are in traditional Japanese fruit parlors and premium bread shops
