7500 BC
Recipes for stewed chicken can be found in China, the Middle East, and West Africa. West Africans were also known to cook chicken in hot oil.
Middle Ages
Written documents show Scottish recipes for fried chicken cooked in fat. When Scottish and English settlers moved to the Americas they brought their recipes. It took their West African slaves in the south to further enhance the bland recipe using their native spices.
1762
Thanks to the Earl of Sandwich’s laziness to use utensils and not wanting to get his hands dirty, the sandwich was named.
1815
Mary Randolph’s cookbook mentions a chicken burger.
1938
A Kraft ad shares the recipe for a Chicken Sandwich Supreme.
That same year, a newspaper ad in Topeka’s Kansas Whip promotes a fried chicken sandwich at the Booker T Cafe.
1956
The Bee from Danville, Virginia writes about a chicken burger recipe.
1964
Atlanta restaurant owner Truett Cathy has a surplus of chicken breasts and makes a grilled chicken sandwich as an alternative to his hamburgers. He names it “Chick-fil-A” and declares to have invented the chicken sandwich.
