Banh Mi – Food Photo Chronicles from Vietnam

Food Memories from Vietnam.

One of the best dishes from Vietnam is their iconic banh mi. These sandwiches are packed with flavor and freshness. Here is a flashback of photos from when I ate a few of these delicious sandwiches in Vietnam over 10 years ago:

Food Photo Chronicles: Banh Mi in Vietnam

Walking through the Chau Doc Market during a 3-Day Mekong Delta Tour. I meant to capture this vendor with her pile of French bread for sale. This lovely local lady laughed with delight as she also caught me taking a photo of her eating some of the bread.

Street Food Carts. These are all over the country along sidewalks – literally street food. You can see the shelf of bread and below that there’s fresh vegetables, sauces, and even trays for the butter and pate.

Street food with street food packaging. The sandwiches are typically wrapped in newspaper and given in a plastic bag. There are no tables and chairs to sit, rather you take it to work, home, or eat it in a nearby park.

Local banh mi shops like from this location sell a wider variety of fillings for the sandwiches. If you have never tried one before, start with the classic Banh Mi Thit which is layered with ham, pork roll, pate, cilantro, carrots, radish, chili, mayonnaise, and fish sauce.

Banh Mi Ca Sardine. There are also options if you do not want to eat pork or meat. In this case, it is canned sardine filling with the same garnishes of radish, carrots, cilantro, mayonnaise, and fish sauce. If you are purely vegetarian, there are also tofu options.
