Beer fans and readers of Serious Eats must all head out to San Mateo to taste what’s brewing at Wursthall.
Wursthall in downtown San Mateo is a German-Austria bierhaus with modern flavors of classic beer hall plates and pints. In the communal spirit of a bierhaus, the restaurant has ample long tables and close seatings to create that sense of community among co-workers, friends, and families of all ages.
Aside from the food, one of the main highlights of the restaurant is co-chef owner Kenji López-Alt, the famed James Beard awarded chef and food writer of Serious Eats. With his technical, food-science teachings, a food fan will certainly come into Wursthall with expectations.
If you love a good beer, you must start with one of the 28 beers on tap which are locally crafted, Belgian, and German. Plus, there are local wines and a fun selection of non-alcoholic choices.
Pair that first drink with one of the few starters offered. The great thing about limited choices on the menu is that those items are typically all really great. So try them all – the pretzels, deviled eggs, and house pickles.
For main plates, the restaurant specializes in their wursts. Other popular dishes include Kenji’s Korean Fried Chicken, the spaetzles, chicken schnitzel, and smashed cheeseburger which can also be ordered as an impossible burger.
