Sushi and Kids: When Can They Have It?

Bottom Line: Yes, They Can Eat Sushi.

At what age can children eat raw sushi? And before that, what are the alternative options? Here is a brief guide for kids eating sushi. Plus, a list of what they can eat at any age that adults will also love!

Can Kids Eat Sushi? Yes They Can.

First and foremost, yes kids can eat sushi. But! And there is a but…They can start to eat raw fish after they turn 5 years old when they have a more developed immune system. And, at this age, they can start with tuna and salmon and other safer fishes like these.

However, it must be noted that the quality of the fish and the preparation is the most important thing to think about when feeding kids sushi. Don’t get cheap sushi, but you don’t need to get crazy expensive sushi either. Look for fresh quality fish that is not smelly or dull looking.

Before the age of 5, when the child is already enjoying solid foods, they can eat other forms of sushi that are not raw fish. Here is a list of what they can eat (and also any of us can eat at any age, too):

  • tamago
  • cooked fish (like unagi, crab, shrimp)
  • tempura rolls
  • inari
  • pickled sushi (the brown or yellow daikon)
  • cucumber
  • avocado
