Seltzer versus Club Soda versus Sparkling Water

Breaking down the Similarities & Differences.

On its own or mixed with a drink, we all can enjoy a refreshing sparkling beverage. But, first, do you know the differences between seltzer versus club soda versus sparkling water?

Seltzer versus Club Soda versus Sparkling Water

Seltzer
Seltzer, also known as soda water, is simply water that is carbonated with carbon dioxide and no trace of minerals. It can be plain or flavored (like, the popular LaCroix). You can also make seltzer at home using a Soda Stream.

Club Soda
Club soda is also carbonated water using carbon dioxide plus the addition of minerals such as potassium bicarbonate and potassium sulfate. These minerals create a slight salty taste which is preferred by bartenders and mixologists in order to bring out the flavors of their mixed drinks. Consider a well-rated brand like Q Club Soda.

Sparkling Water
Also known as sparkling mineral water, sparkling water comes from natural spring water or well water which means the minerals, salts, and sulfur compounds are not added on and all from the natural source.

Some sources of sparkling water have their own natural carbonation while many other brands add carbon dioxide. The taste of sparkling water varies according to the source which each has its distance mineral content.

When it comes to sparkling water, consider classic brands like Perrier and San Pellegrino.

Bonus: Tonic Water
Tonic water is unlike the other carbonated waters above. It is carbonate water with the addition of sugar or high fructose corn syrup plus quinine which adds that bitter taste. Once used as a medicine for malaria and digestive problems, tonic water is now classic with gin or vodka and a splash of lime. Because there are better sugars out there, look to a brand like Fever Tree.
