Staying at the New NH Collection Gran Via Madrid

An Oasis in the Middle of Central Madrid

If you want to make the most of your stay in Madrid, it’s best to stay around the center to be able to walk to most areas. The new NH Collection Gran Via has a most ideal location with a quiet oasis feeling that gets you away from the crowds once you enter the property.

The Location

NH Collection Gran Via sits right in the middle of Gran Via and central Madrid. You are footsteps away from Puerta del Sol and just a few more minutes away from Plaza Mayor. All the major landmarks, restaurants, and taverns are within walking distance. Alternatively, Gran Via is a major street to call a taxi or Uber.

There are two downsides to the location. One, the crowds of tourists right outside the door. However, the moment you enter the glass sliding doors, the cool clean air immediately takes you away from the chaos and into a pleasant oasis.

The other downside is that there is not an official driveway or drop-off area for vehicles. Cars may load and unload between the barriers right outside of the hotel. However, if you come from the other side the road, some drivers will not want to want to make a u-turn and you will have to lug your belongings across the major street.

The centralized location and walking ability to almost everywhere easily outweigh the downsides. While the hotel is still new, the NH Collection Gran Via is a great option for a four-star luxury hotel in Madrid.

View from your bedroom window. The hotel commands epic views of Gran Via which you can enjoy from the rooftop sky bar or right in your room where you have access to a small private balcony

The Rooms and Suites

The lobby and reception are located on the 8th floor of the building. Once you check-in, your rooms are on the floors below. The hotel has 94 rooms and suites of 3 categories: the superior room, the premier room, and the suite. If you are two persons, the rooms and suites have more than enough space. If you will be 3 or 4 persons, consider getting two rooms – two connecting rooms are even better.

Because the hotel just opened in May 2018, you can still feel the newness and cleanliness. However, after staying in the hotel for 4 nights, you can note the lack of thorough daily cleaning. On top of that, turndown service only showed up on the first night and never came back to refresh the rooms on the last 3 nights. It would be best to stay at NH Collection Gran Via with its first year, after that you will likely start to notice the wear and tear from lack of proper cleaning.

The decor and linens are modern clean giving the hotel a fresh feel. At the moment, much of central Madrid is undergoing renovations, so to come back to a clean, fresh, modern room away from the construction dust is the best feeling
Bathroom with a modern decor and luxury hotel amenities and toiletries. You can enjoy NH branded soaps, shampoo, conditioners, and moisturizers as well as Loewe cologne. For extra pampering, you can relax in the hotel robe and room slippers
If you are a group of 3 or 4, consider getting 2 connecting rooms (instead of one small suite). You can close the main front door, and leave your room doors open to create even more space from your hallways
The second room will have 2 twin beds and a bathroom with a slightly different configuration. The rooms have just enough space for a few large luggages plus a small sitting corner and desk
Welcome treat. On the evening of your first arrival, you may have turndown service in which they will gift you with welcome chocolates and sweets as well as a welcome letter

Buffet Breakfast – Worth It.

Breakfast is an added price to include with your room rate. If you book it ahead of time, it is significantly cheaper than deciding the night before or the morning of. If you are a fan of breakfast, the buffet is more than worth it with the quality and selection of breakfast spread. Plus, you can dine al fresco on the outdoor patio or stay cool inside the restaurant.

Help yourself to the breakfast buffet spread. First, there are the fruits and juice. Then, prepared egg dishes (although you can also request for made-to-order eggs) as well as sweets
There is also a toaster and station for bread, cold cuts, and cereals with milk and yogurts. It is a full continental plus hot food breakfast with high-quality offerings making the value of pre-paying for breakfast when you book very worth it
When in Spain, have bread and tomato, or pan con tomate. The bread station has a container with grated tomatoes for you to put on your slices of toasted bread
The wait staff and kitchen will happily make eggs as you like them. In Spain, fried eggs are a specialty because of how they get the whites deliciously browned and crispy while the yolk remains perfectly runny
The prepared egg dishes will have egg sandwiches, another typical Spanish breakfast. The hotel caters to many Spaniards as NH is a hotel chain from Spain so they put an emphasis on having local offerings
