“Junk food” refers to food that has little nutritional value and instead is it loaded with fat, sugar, salt, and calories. Here are 9 interesting facts as well as eye-opening junk food facts:

1. Cotton candy, first known as candy floss, was invented by a dentist.

2. On average, Americans consume 22 teaspoons of sugar a day, mostly from soft drinks and candy bars.

3. Eating processed food makes it harder to burn calories and it is the root cause of nearly all modern diseases, such as heart disease and cancer.

4. Eating junk food and processed foods are as addicting to the brain as drugs.

5. A single burger can have up to more than 100 cow parts.

6. Some fast-food salads pack on more calories than a Big Mac. Take the Bacon Ranch with 680 calories from its buttermilk fried chicken, bacon, and salad dressing; whereas the Big Mac comes in at 540 calories.

7. Chicken nuggets contain very little meat and mostly bones, fat, and tendons.

8. McDonald’s Filet O’ Fish was created in 1962 for Catholics during the Lenten season who did not eat meat during Fridays.

9. French fries are not from France. They were first created in Belgium in 1876. “French” refers to the type of cut for the fries.
 

Bottom line, read the ingredients in the foods you buy. And, eat everything in moderation. Oh, and eat more fruits and vegetables.
