Airplanes have a scary amount of germs making it too easy to get sick on travel days. Here are 8 healthy flying tips to lessen your chances of getting sick:
Pack disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, and tissue in your carry-on and keep it with you in a small pouch during the flight. You never know what you’ll touch or when you’ll want to clean your hands during the flight.
Take Vitamin C before, during, and/or even after the flight (but be cautious of not going over the daily milligram limit of about 500 to 1000mg). This supplement helps to strengthen your immune system and fight against your inevitable exposure to germs during the flight.
Using the disinfectant wipes that you brought or the hot towel provided (given on some Business Class airlines), wipe down your surroundings including your armrests, the side panels of your seat, the remote, buttons, knobs, tray table, and even the seat belt. And, yes, prepare to be grossed out with how black the towel will be after that wipe down.
A plane’s bathroom is quite possibly the grossest and dirtiest place in the plane. First of all, if a person is taking way too long in the stall, seriously consider using another bathroom stall. Second, do not touch anything – knobs, the toilet seat, the flush button, or the sink handle. Use a paper towel to touch all of that and throw it away before leaving the stall.
If you are wary of germs, wear a mask. While masks may give the perception to others that you are sick, it really helps you to avoid breathing in the germs of others around you. So don’t worry about what others think, and take care of yourself. Also, if you want to sleep well on the plane without waking up with a dry nose and throat, wear a mask which reduces breathing in the plane’s dry air.
A single cough spreads a gross amount of germ particles, let alone a sneeze spreading those germs faster and farther. If someone coughs or sneezes near you, avoid them as much as possible, with the very least turning away from the germs and covering your mouth and nose with a handkerchief.
Drink water inflight and afterward to stay hydrated and healthy. But, do not drink the plane’s tap water as it is definitely not the cleanest water. And, as much as it’s fun to have a free-flow of drinks, limit your alcohol, coffee, and tea intake during the flight as these are diuretics that dehydrate instead of hydrate.
Rest on the plane may not be completely possible, but try your best to get a good night’s rest on your first full day after the flight – whether that is in your destination or at home. Rest will greatly help heal and rejuvenate your body from any germs you may have picked up during the course of your travel day.
