Hotel Review of the New Gate Hotel Tokyo.

The Gate Hotel Tokyo by Hulic opened in December 2018 with an amazing location mere steps away from the iconic Ginza intersection, as well as meters away from Yurakucho, Hibiya, and Marunouchi.

The hotel’s address has guests enjoying the lively spirit of Ginza while entering into a quiet, modern, and clean hotel to start and end every day in Tokyo. When you exit the hotel, turn left for the famous Yurakucho Alley full of yummy yakitori, a few more steps left takes you to Hibiya, and crossing the street takes you toward Marunouchi. Turn right from the hotel entrance, you are in at the start of Ginza where you can enjoy premium boutiques and department stores like Tokyu Plaza and Ginza Mitsukoshi.

Room Types

Gate Hotel Tokyo offers guests 6 room types, starting with Modest at 20 square meters which fits a double bed and a desk. For Japanese standards, this is already large for one person and comfortable for 2 adults.

Essential is the next category up with 24 to 26 square meter rooms having either a double bed or two twin beds. Essential Twin rooms can connect.

Classy rooms offer a king bed, two kinds of twin bedrooms, or a triple with 3 twin beds in a 36 square meter space. There is also a “Universal” room for persons with disabilities. Classy Twin rooms can connect to each other. Starting at this Classy category and up, all bathrooms have two sinks and enclosed toilets which are great when sharing a room.

If you are seeking the luxury of spaciousness, Canopy rooms have a large canopy king bed in a 44 square meter space while Luxe rooms are two twin beds in a 42 square meter space and a king bed in a larger 52 square meter room.

For the ultimate luxury and a most unique feature of an outdoor jacuzzi in the middle of Ginza, book the Suite which takes up 73 square meters on the 13th/top floor of the hotel. Aside from the outdoor jacuzzi, the suite has a sitting/dining area, a bedroom with two twin beds, and 1.5 baths including an additional enclosed toilet.

Classy Twin room from the entrance door. The room is quite spacious for two adults with room for the large luggages. The twin beds are actually full beds which makes for a comfortable sleep. Note that the entrance door is a bit tight when opening it to the foot of the first bed and the closet in front of the bed.

 

Traditional Japanese pajamas. Providing nightwear is typical in Japanese hotels. These two piece pajamas are so comfortable and can be changed each day with housekeeping. This is great when it comes to packing as you do not need to pack your own sleepwear.

 

Complimentary amenities include bottled water, Nespresso coffee capsules, and tea which are all replenished each day during housekeeping. There is also a minibar with chargeable drinks. The room has a nice little couch and table for those mornings or evenings you buy food to enjoy in the room.

Japanese hotels can be small and cramped. Gate Hotel Tokyo pampers guests with the luxury of a spacious bathroom and two sinks with ample counter space for their toiletries. In the bathroom you will find the usual amenities as well as a bathrobe and weight scale.

Shower and bathtubs like these are common in Japan as the culture is to take a shower and then follow it up with a tub bath. The bathroom amenities include bath salts for to complete your bath experience.

 

Enclosed toilets and toilet bidets are also common in Japanese culture. Once you experience the privacy of an enclosed toilet, you will wish every hotel can have this feature because of the privacy you have when on the toilet and the rest of the bathroom can still be used by others.

 

Classy Twin Rooms connect to one another. This is perfect if you travel as a family or group of close friends. Opening up the door makes the two rooms feel even larger. Book 2 Classy Twin rooms and make a special request to the hotel for connecting rooms.

 

Amenities

Room amenities include a Nespresso machine with complimentary capsules, an electric pot and complimentary black and green tea packs, complimentary bottled water refilled each day, and two piece pajamas to enjoy during your stay (and if you love it so much you can purchase a set).

Bathroom amenities include a weight scale and hair dryer as well as complimentary toiletries replenished each day such as a hair brush, toothbrush, razor, shower cap, cotton set, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and moisturizer.
 

Fitness Center

The Fitness Center on the 13th floor is open to hotel guests between 6 am to 11 pm. Many hotels in Japan do not offer a hotel gym, so even if this is a smaller space it is still a great feature for the hotel. The gym includes 2 treadmills, 1 elliptical, 1 stationary bicycle, and 1 recumbent bicycle. While there are no free weights, there is one chest press machine and floor mats for bodyweight exercises.

 

Lounge for Hotel Guests

The top floor of the hotel offers guests a Premium Lounge and Roof Top Terrace. This feature offers complimentary snacks, orange juice, and beer to guests staying in Canopy, Luxe, and Suite rooms between 2 pm to 10:30 pm. All other hotel guests may enjoy the facilities and pay for drinks and snacks between 6 am to 1 pm.

 

Hotel Lobby, Restaurant & Bar

The Hotel Lobby which features a modern indoor area and gorgeous outdoor terrace overlooking Ginza offers all guests drinks between the hours of 6:30 am to 11:30 pm. Hotel guests can order drinks 24 hours a day.

 
For all-day dining, walk around the lobby to the hotel restaurant, Anchor Tokyo. Guests can feast on a limited buffet featuring fruits and vegetables as well as one main course with a choice of eggs benedict, pancakes, or french toast for 3,300 yen per person.

The restaurant also has a lunch and dinner menu with set courses and a la carte items. In lieu of not having room service, the restaurant is open to hotel guests 24 hours a day. Anchor Tokyo also features a small bar area with premium drinks, champagne, and draft beer. Note, prices are marked up higher as you would expect in a hotel restaurant and bar.

For a dinner splurge, make reservations at the hotel’s top floor restaurant, Teppanyaki Yasuma featuring a 6-seater counter and 1 private room for up to 8 guests. Set menus start at 18,000 yen per person.

– Exit C1 at Ginza Station from Hibiya Line and Marunouchi Line. (Note: this is the underground entrance to the hotel that directly connects from Ginza Station.)

– Exit A1 at Hibiya Station from Hibiya Line and Chiyoda Line

– Exit D7 at Hibiya Station from Toei Mita Line

– Exit D7 at Yurakucho Station from Yurakucho Line

– Ginza Exit at Yurakucho Station from Keihintohoku Line
 
By Bullet Train
– From Tokyo Station take the Yamanote Line to Yurakucho Station

– From Tokyo Station take the Marunouchi Line to Ginza Station

– Get a taxi from Tokyo Station to the hotel (about 600 yen for a 5-minute drive)
 
By Car or Taxi

From Haneda Airport
– Airport Limousine Bus to Ginza Station or Peninsula Hotel Tokyo. Then cross the street with your luggages.

– By Train, take the Keikyu Line to Shinagawa Station and transfer to the Yamanote Line to Yurakucho Station.
or
– Get a taxi or Uber from Haneda directly to the hotel for about 6,700 yo 7,800 yen depending on the time of day.
 
From Narita Airport
– Take the Narita Express to Tokyo Station and transfer to the Yamanote Line to Yurakucho Station
or
– Take the Keisei Skyliner to Nippori Station and transfer to the Yamanote Line to Yurakucho Station
or
– Take the Bus (either Airport Limousine Bus/Access Narita/Tokyo Shuttle) to Ginza Station. If you have heavy bags, consider taking the Airport Limousine Bus to the Tokyo City Air Terminal and getting a taxi to the hotel for about 1,500 yen.
