Let’s learn about the things we eat, starting with fruits! And even with fruits that we didn’t even realize are fruits. Here are 15 fascinating fruit facts, many of which will certainly surprise:

1. Tomatoes are fruits and the most popular fruit in the world at that. The only reason they are considered a vegetable is that the US Supreme Court classified tomatoes as a vegetable in 1890 for tax purposes. But ultimately, it has seeds that qualify them as a fruit.
 
2. Pumpkins and cucumbers are fruits, too. As well as avocados, bell peppers, eggplants, olives, peas, and zucchini.
 
3. Strawberries are the only fruit with seeds on the outside.
 
4. Strawberries are not classified as berries. Nor are blackberries and raspberries.
 
5. Bananas are classified as berries. As well as avocados, grapes, kiwis, pineapples, and tomatoes.
 
6. Kiwis have twice the amount of vitamin C than an orange.
 
7. Not all oranges are orange. In tropical regions, oranges are grown in warmer climates which causes them to stay green or yellow even when fully ripe.
 
8. Figs have as much calcium as a glass of milk.
 
9. Supermarket apples can be up to 12 months old. Apples are stored in controlled atmosphere storages in which they are put to sleep before being sold to consumers.
 
10. A single apple tree can produce up to 400 apples a year.
 
11. A single banana is called a finger. A cluster of 5 to 6 fingers is called a hand. All the hands on a stem are called a bunch.
 
12. Once grapes are picked they can no longer ripen; whereas bananas and oranges are picked green and ripen in warehouses.
 
13. The name coconut came from 16th-century Portuguese sailors who thought the three holes on the coconut resembled a face. “Coco” means “grinning face”. The nut of coconut was added later on to the English language.
 
14. Coffee beans are the put of a berry, and therefore it’s a fruit.
 
15. Almonds are technically not a nut, but rather classified as a member of the peach family.
