Frozen yogurt is another fun summer treat that boasts as a healthy alternative to ice cream. Read about the frozen yogurt history and its origin stories.
Compared to the centuries-old ice cream, frozen yogurt is a more recent invention that was first created in the 1970s in the New England area of the United States by H.P. Hood. The treat was first called “frogurt”.
Its appreciation was slow in the 70s, but soon picked up in the latter parts of the decade and rose in popularity by the decade. In 1978, an ice cream shop in Boston, Brigham’s, first packaged a frozen yogurt product called “Humphreez Yogart”, then soon the Dannon Yogurt Company produced frozen treats.
In 1981, TCBY opened the first frozen yogurt shop in 1981, and by 1984 more than 100 stores were selling frozen yogurt across the country. By the 1990s, frozen yogurt accounted for 10% of the frozen dessert market. Today, frozen yogurt continues to enjoy its place as a summer treat for all ages.
