Coffee Pairing in Japan: 8 Best Sweets

Something Sweet with Your Coffee.

Coffee in Japan is amazing. Desserts in Japan are amazing. So it only makes sense to pair the best sweets with your daily cup of coffee. Here are 8 incredible desserts for your coffee pairing in Japan.

1. Biscotti & Biscuits

Biscotti and biscuits are the natural pairing with a cup of coffee. Angelo’s Biscottiera makes perfect little bites that complement and enhance your coffee. The biscuits are beautifully buttery and some with wonderfully exotic spices, while the biscotti have a perfect texture. Plus, you can purchase these biscotti and biscuits online (with deliveries within Japan and to the Philippines).

2. Belgian Waffles

Fluffy, chewy, buttery Belgian waffles are a great start to the day, snack in the middle of the day, and as a nightcap to have with coffee. Manneken is a brand to look for in Japan and you can find them in train stations or even in a prime Ginza corner.

3. Castella Cake

For a classic Japanese treat with your coffee, find a castella cake in the department store food halls. These light and fluffy, yet slightly dense and chewy cakes have a delicious eggy, slightly sugary, caramelized taste.

4. Baumkuchen

Baumkuchen is another dessert that you can find in the department store food halls. These European-inspired Japanese cakes are a local favorite with many recreations like with this creme brûlée version.

5. Rusk

Toasted bread cubes are the sweet version of the savory crouton. You can find premium ones in department store food halls or even these deliciously affordable packs at the local convenience store. Word of warning, they are addicting.

6. Croissants

Pair your coffee with a European classic, the croissant. For an indulgent treat, head to the Echire shop in Marunouchi. For fun little croissants, get the mini croissants in Johan or Mini One, located in premium department store food halls.

7. Tiramisu

Play with complementary flavors and pair your coffee with a coffee-infused tiramisu. If you love a light, fluffy, creamy kind of tiramisu, try the one at Eataly in Tokyo Station.

8. Tarte Tatin

For an absolute treat, order this beautiful slice of tarte tatin at Viron Brasserie. The apples are incredibly caramelized and a brilliant pairing with a hot cup of coffee.
