The state of business class travel has certainly changed over the years. With more passengers able to spend, the refinement of the cabin has become lacking. However, it does not have to be completely gone, as these are the unspoken rules for business class etiquette:
While there is no strict dress code for Business Class, passengers must keep in mind that it is still “business” class. That implies proper business attire, which can be business casual. Business attire does not mean stiff suits and uncomfortable leather shoes. Brands today, such as Uniqlo, sell comfortable and decent cotton jackets, tops, and slacks that are suitable long travel.
Today, at the very least, passengers should wear Smart Casual attire. That means to the bare minimal not wearing slippers and beachwear. If you do want to wear pajamas or sleeping clothes, change into it in the airplane and change out of it before landing.
First of all, a fair warning that not all airlines have the best business class service. So do not expect too much, but expect a little more than economy class. Often times, the service level is rather cultural – for instance, any Japan airline will have polite flight attendants.
Secondly, there are unspoken rules for how the passenger should treat the flight attendant, as these are fellow human beings doing their job for you. So to the very least go back to the basics of “please” and “thank you”. Just because you paid for Business Class does not mean these are your slaves.
Business Class implies a higher level of standards compared to Economy Class – this goes for the seat quality, food quality, service, and how a passenger should behave as well.
Don’t leave your seat in shambles; try to neaten up after yourself. Don’t put your shoes up, nor your bare feet; this isn’t your personal living room. Stay quiet during the flight; there’s no reason to use a loud voice. Control your coughing; there are others around you breathing in those germs. Control your flatulence; that’s just gross – go to the bathroom.
