Mt. Fuji is one of Japan’s most iconic sights as well as the highest mountain in the country. On a clear day, you can see the mountain top from Tokyo. Here are 5 amazing places to see the best of Mt. Fuji:
An easy day trip from Tokyo, Mt. Fuji has a clear vantage point from Hakone’s Lake Ashi on a cloudless blue sky day. A drive to Hakone takes about 1 to 2 hours. Alternatively, you can take a combination of a train and a bus to Hakone for a similar amount of time.
One of the five lakes surrounding Mt. Fuji, Lake Kawaguchi is the closest of the lakes to the mountain. You can take a couple of trains from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko Station and then walk a couple of kilometers to the lake (or take a taxi). A drive takes about 2 hours and the trains take about 3 hours.
If you want to make the most of your day, head to Fuji-Q Highland which is one of Japan’s most popular amusements park located at the base of Mt. Fuji. A drive takes about 2 hours and the trains take about 2.5 hours.
If outlet shopping is your style of travel, head to Gotemba Premium Outlets where you can catch the sight of Mt. Fuji in the backdrop. You can take a 1.5-hour drive or take a direct bus from the major train stations.
If you want to venture a bit farther than the typical tourist, head to Lake Tanuki which is another one of the five lakes surrounding Mt. Fuji. To get to Lake Tanuki, you can take a bus or multiple trains to Fujinomiya Station for about 2.5 hours and then a 45-minute bus to the lake.
