Christmas is not complete without the iconic candy cane. It is the most loved Christmas candy. The candy has evolved over the last 350 years. As we enter the winter season, learn the famous Christmas Candy Cane History:

It has been told that German choirboys in Cologne in 1670 were given candy sticks by the choirmaster to behave properly during church. For the candy to have a good reason as a church treat, they were shaped like a shepherd’s staff so the children can think about baby Jesus being born in the manger.
From there, the candy cane spread through Europe as they were handed out during Nativity plays.
Over in the U.S., the first documented sighting of candy canes was recorded in 1847 when a German-Swedish immigrant, August Imgard, decorated a tree with all-white candy canes and paper ornaments.
By the turn of the 20th century, red and white peppermint candy canes became the favored flavor.
Before the 1950s, the candy canes were hand-twisted. Then mass production took over and automated the candy-making process which furthered its popularity as a candy.
